Sigma Kappa Sorority Paddle

Sorority Paddle, originally uploaded by Rachel René.

Sorority Paddles are still around though some frown upon them. Since they are for decorative and gift purposes only, I don't see why any should object.

Anyway, isn't this a beautifully decorated ? The sorority sister that made this, designed it around the theme, "Painting the Roses Red" Since Sigma Kappa's symbols are hearts and doves along with maroon and lavender as its colors, the design features all came together in the theme based paddle. She commented, "The paddle was very hard to take pictures of as I coated it in glitter and it was late afternoon but I think this picture turned out alright. :)"

I love the paintbrush full of red paint.....what a great touch? The 3D dove and rose at the top really set it all off.

Thanks to Rachel Rene for her Flickr picture of this Sigma Kappa paddle.

Delta Zeta Sorority Crafts-Wooden Turtle Cutouts

Make a Delta Zeta Turtle magnet for your FRIG.

Wooden cutouts for crafting are usually available at craft stores or online.

Paint a batch of turtles and use them to make Christmas ornaments, gift tags (that will be saved). Glue one in the center of a scrapbook front cover to make a custom designed scrapbook. IN the same way, you can decorate a journal or any notebook to make it represent your sorority.

These are so inexpensive and fun to decorate that you will enjoy thinking of friends to give them to.

Delta Zeta Sorority-Make Handpainted Turtle Magnets

Need some surprises to give your little sister this semester? Consider making your own sorority gifts like these sorority mascot magnets shown above. These are easy and require very few materials. You can turn out a bunch in a short amount of time.

Directions are posted at our new Sorority Magnets page.

These sorority magnets are so much fun to make. The samples are made for Delta Zeta, but you can adapt for any mascot and Greek letters.

Look at craft stores like Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or Jo Anns, and usually what you need is at Walmart where you can find whatever need for this project. (40% Off the Regular Price of One Item at Joann.com (Code: DECA840)

Sorority Craft: Gift Baskets for Little or Big

Make your little sister a sorority gift basket and fill it with anything you like to make it more special.

You can use any basket for this idea, but chipped wood baskets work particularly well.
The colorful liner for the basket is made from a scrap of fabric. The tag is made from acid free scrapbooking cardstock.
Be creative with your tag. It can be as simple as your Greek letters applied with a marker, or you can use the idea above.... using your mascot as your design.

Tag Design Ideas:
1. Rubber stamp of mascot or sorority flower colored with pastel pencils
2. Sticker of your mascot, symbol, or flower
3. Cut out your mascot, symbol, or flower from a greeting card that you have saved
4. Draw and paint your own design

It doesn't take long to make your tag, and if you mess up, just start over

Sorority Scrapbook Paper - Alpha Chi Omega Idea

A Great Scrapbook Idea:

Start a scrapbook for your little sister this fall and let her finish it.
Include some of these pages that you print off yourself, as well as special photos of sorority events or photos of the two of you together. What a great sorority keepsake can be made by a big and little working together.

An Ebay seller has designed beautiful sorority papers that can be downloaded and printed out on your printer. These sorority paper designs enable you to create a personalized scrapbook highlighting your sorority. UPDATE October 2009(SORRY...last I checked, these sorority scrapbook papers were no longer available!)

Make a Handpainted Delta Zeta Picture Frame with Turtle

This Delta Zeta Picture frame was made as a sample for this blog.

You Can Make One!!

Here is a hand-crafted gift that is easy to make for a sorority gift.

Recycle a picture frame and make it into a very special Big Sister/Little Sister sorority gift.

Here are some TIPS to get you started:

This picture frame was already painted olive green.

If the frame you have available is not the color that you want, or if it is scratched, etc. in need of paint.....simply paint it with acrylic paint which is available for less than one dollar. The black foam "brushes" work great for a project like this one and they, too, are very inexpensive.

I used some acid free white cardstock paper to sketch a little turtle. I colored him with colored pencils and then cut him out. I glued him to the mat that was already a part of my frame.

Try to use what you have, but you can buy different colored mats in standard sizes at craft stores.

The rest of the design is painted with acrylic paints onto the frame and then sprayed with crystal clear varnish (varnish is optional, but helps to preserve your work)

If you are not confident using paintbrushes, you can use paint pens for a very good effect. Practice the way you are going to write, first on paper before you actually paint or write on your frame. This helps prevent an undesired outcome.

Embellish your written design with some little hand painted flowers. Use the end of the paint brush to dip in the paint to make the dots of the flower. Then add stems and leaves with green paint. These, too, can be painted with paint pens if you don't like to use paintbrushes.

Delta Zeta-Handpainted Little Sister Gifts

All of these items in the picture are easy to make. The turtles are very simply painted, but the effect is pleasing. Delta Zeta sisters that like to make their own sorority gifts will see that these gift items would be fairly easy to make. Get some acrylic paints or paint pens and see what you can do.

Try painting mini turtles on foam star stickers. OR

Use pink scrapbooking paper to cover a nut or coffee can. Then decorated with a turtle cut from paper. OR

Make your on DZ turtle gift bags from simple white lunch bags. Punch holes at the top of the bag to thread ribbon through and finish by tying the ribbon into a bow.

If you try any of my ideas, I would love for you to attach a picture of your creation to an email for me ( see sidebar for my email link)

Relax.....turtles are fun to paint. You will love it!!

A D Pi Lion Basket: A great inexpensive sorority gift idea!

What do you think of this basket?

I am trying to offer economical options for gifts since I am well aware that college students have to be very careful with their spending choices.

Another idea I would like to pursue, if I hear from some takers, is to offer a newsletter of Ideas for gifts you can make yourself for your Sorority Sisters. Let me know if you would be interested in something like that.

I accidentally had my BLOG comments turned off during the last month or so, but now I believe I have enabled them. Please leave me a comment if you have something to add. Have a Great Day!!
